The Brightlands Smart Health Lab centers its research on three core themes: FAIR health data infrastructure, predicting future health states, and introducing AI decision support into healthcare systems.

To drive these advancements, the lab leverages key technical AI components, focusing primarily on:

  • Computer Vision
  • Decision Making
  • Information Retrieval
  • Knowledge Representation & Reasoning
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Machine Learning

With a commitment to explainable AI and socially responsible, effective data-driven healthcare solutions.

Sustainable Development Goals

About the lab

The Brightlands Smart Health Lab is dedicated to bridging the gap between advanced AI research and personalized clinical practice.

The lab’s mission and vision are to build the fundamental knowledge base, technological tools, and human capacities necessary to create a smarter, more personalized learning health system, enabling data to be made FAIR, predicting future health outcomes, and embedding AI into daily care.

The impact of the lab lies in accelerating digital health innovation, achieved by validating breakthroughs directly in real-world clinical settings alongside hospital and industry partners, empowering patients and clinicians through shared decision-making, and embedding explainable, accountable, and socially responsible AI frameworks to build trust across the healthcare ecosystem.

Research projects

Make Health Data FAIR (TRL 1–7) – Focuses on transforming unstructured medical records and images into Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data using natural language processing, automated image processing, and knowledge graphs.

Make AIs to Predict Outcomes (TRL 3–6) – Focuses on developing deep learning, machine learning, and causal models to forecast future health states and treatment outcomes based on specific clinical interventions.

Introduce AI into Healthcare (TRL 4–8) – Focuses on deploying AI models directly into health systems and evaluating their clinical impact through patient and clinician shared decision-making tools.
