EAISI AIMM Lab

A collaboration between Eindhoven University of Technology, KMWE, Lely, Marel and Nexperia.

The AI-enabled Manufacturing and Maintenance Lab (AIMM Lab) centers its research on two core themes: smart manufacturing capabilities and predictive maintenance for high-tech systems.

To drive these advancements, the lab leverages key technical AI components, focusing primarily on:

  • Autonomous Agents & Robotics
  • Computer Vision
  • Decision Making
  • Machine Learning
  • Knowledge Representation & Reasoning

With a commitment to robust, reliable, safe, and responsible systems that support engineers, protect privacy, and minimize environmental impact.

Sustainable Development Goals

About the lab

The AI-enabled Manufacturing and Maintenance Lab (AIMM Lab) is dedicated to bridging the gap between academic AI research and industrial manufacturing and maintenance applications.

The lab’s mission and vision are to build the fundamental knowledge base, technological tools, and human capacities necessary to transition to a new generation of smart, automated, and flexible operations supported and enhanced by reliable, model-driven, and data-integrated AI systems.

The impact of the lab lies in accelerating industrial innovation and regional competitiveness, achieved by validating breakthroughs directly in live factory and field settings alongside industry partners, fostering talent development and student entrepreneurship, and embedding responsible, safe, and sustainable AI frameworks to build trust across the high-tech ecosystem.

Research projects

Production planning & capacity optimization – Focused on improving high-mix, high-complexity manufacturing capabilities, specifically around smart planning, scheduling, and dispatching rules.

Outage prediction & decision support for engineers – Focused on developing reliable AI systems that predict failure causes during outages and effectively communicate diagnostic recommendations to maintenance engineers.

AGV fleet control in factories – Focused on the intelligent coordination, routing, and real-time control of Autonomous Guided Vehicle (AGV) fleets moving in close concert with factory personnel.

Predictive maintenance for agricultural & processing equipment – Focused on creating predictive maintenance concepts and models to minimize downtime for high-tech agricultural and food processing machinery.
