The FEP Lab centers its research on one core theme: transfer of free energy principle methods to practical use in human-centered agents to cause desirable behavioral changes in people.

To drive these advancements, the lab leverages key technical AI components, focusing primarily on:

  • Autonomous Agents & Robotics

  • Decision Making

With a commitment to explainable AI systems.

Sustainable Development Goals

About the lab

The FEB Lab is focus its research on transferring a leading physics/neuroscience-based theory about computation in the brain, the Free Energy Principle (FEP), to practical use in human-centered agents such as hearing devices and VR technology.

The lab’s mission and vision are to ameliorate the participation difficulty of hearing-impaired people in formal and informal social settings.

The impact of the lab lies in its contribution towards the development of technology that is ready for deployment in the professional hearing device industry.

Research projects

Reactive message passing for robust inference – Focuses on developing robust Bayesian inference capabilities under situated conditions.

Reactive message passing for FEP agents – Focuses on realizing robust and scalable Free Energy Principle (FEP) agents.

Generative probabilistic models for audio processing – Focuses on developing probabilistic generative models specifically for hearing devices.

Generative probabilistic models for covert user interactions – Focuses on learning to optimize interaction protocols for hearing devices based on user interactions.

Interaction design for hearing aid personalization – Focuses on identifying the social, psychological, ethical, legal, and practical issues involved in in-situ hearing device tuning.
