The AILogLab is dedicated to bridging the gap between technical AI research and the complex challenges of the freight logistics sector.

 

The lab’s mission and vision are to leverage the power of AI to build the fundamental knowledge base, technological tools, and human capacities necessary to transition to a more efficient, sustainable, equitable, and resilient freight transportation system.

 

The impact of the lab lies in nurturing data- and model-driven AI technology directly into practical application, achieved by validating breakthroughs in live port, maritime, and transport settings alongside industrial and societal partners, fostering young scientific entrepreneurship through start-up ecosystems, and embedding explainable AI frameworks to build trust across the logistics ecosystem.

Research projects

FMaaS (It’s a cargo match!) – Focuses on developing intelligent matching platforms to optimize synchromodal logistics and cargo distribution.

 

PortAI – Applies AI and big data analytics to optimize operations and overall performance within port environments.

 

PortCall.Zero – Focuses on advancing sustainable, low-emission port operations through smart scheduling and resource management.

 

SeaAI – Leverages AI and big data analytics to enhance efficiency, safety, and performance in sea transport and shipping operations.

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) acts as the lead academic institution, driving multi-faculty research in AI methods and tools for freight transportation across its Civil Engineering, EEMCS, Mechanical Engineering, and TPM faculties.

 

ALICE (Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe) helps drive European industry-led strategies for research, innovation, and logistics market deployment.

 

KOTUG contributes real-world operational testbeds and expertise in port towage and sustainable maritime operations to co-create AI solutions for smart shipping.

 

Macomi provides SME expertise in AI and data analytics for logistics maintenance, port, and rail sectors, while contributing to AI education.

 

Rijkswaterstaat is part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands.

 

SmartPort is a neutral knowledge platform, stimulating alliances, financing scientific research and providing public knowledge dissemination, with aim of speeding up innovations in the Port of Rotterdam.

 

NWO (Dutch Research Council) is the national research organization of the Netherlands, providing major public research grants to advance scientific quality and innovation.

 

Port of Rotterdam is the Europe’s largest seaport, directly funding research to drive digitalization, sustainability, and operational optimization across port logistics.
