The LATTICE Lab (ICAI Lab on conversational ArTifical inTelligence nEtwork) is focused on advancing research in the field of conversational AI. Based at Leiden University and led by Prof. Dr. Suzan Verberne, Dr. Faegheh Hasibi, and Dr. Jan N. van Rijn, the lab functions as a collaborative hub for public-private and public-public projects. Its primary societal goal is to democratize human language technology and conversational AI, specifically for the Dutch language, by reducing reliance on major international tech companies. The lab’s research spans several technical AI foundations -natural language processing, machine learning, and information retrieval – while emphasizing multidisciplinary aspects like explainable, socially aware, and responsible AI. Its first major initiative, the LESSEN project, involves 15 researchers and a consortium of academic and industrial partners (such as KPN, Ahold Delhaize, and the University of Amsterdam) to develop conversational agents for lower-resource contexts.
