Utrecht AI & Mobility Lab

A collaboration between Utrecht University, ProRail, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), and Qbuzz.

The Utrecht AI & Mobility Lab centers its research on three core themes: mobility, transport, and logistics.

To drive these advancements, the lab leverages key technical AI components, focusing primarily on:

  • Autonomous Agents & Robotics
  • Decision Making
  • Information Retrieval
  • Machine Learning
  • Knowledge & Reasoning

With a commitment to socially aware, explainable, and responsible AI systems.

Sustainable Development Goals

About the lab

The Utrecht AI & Mobility Lab is dedicated to addressing major challenges in mobility and public transport by focusing on safety, accessibility, throughput and emissions.

The lab’s mission and vision are to develop innovative AI techniques for various mobility domains such as public transportation, intelligent infrastructure, and mobility behavior of the public.

The impact of the lab lies in its contribution to fundamental and applied research within the field by developing and integrating data- and model-driven techniques. This will improve  the optimization of logistics processes like train schedules and goods transport, personalized online services, decision-support systems for policy and management, and the construction of intelligent infrastructure for monitoring and controlling traffic.

Research projects

Planning sustainable public transport with Qbuzz – Designing and developing algorithms for vehicle and crew scheduling that support the transition to electric buses.

Planning at service locations of NS – Designing and developing a prototype decision support system for planning at service locations.

Early-warning for out-of-control situations in railway systems – Developing an approach based on complexity science to study the evolution towards oud-of-ontrol situations and to predict these situations.
