Driving scientific discovery with machine intelligence: an interview with Romana Pernisch

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome the State Secretary for Digital Economy and Sovereignty and her team to LAB42 UvA. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss how the ICAI ecosystem bridges the gap between academic research and practical impact through multi-stakeholder collaborations. By fostering a robust network across knowledge institutions, industry, and government, we ensure that technological power remains distributed and directly serves society.

This day was about collaboration, real-world impact and the need to support further AI innovation. We kicked off the afternoon with an introduction to LAB42 as the UvA’s AI and deep-tech hub, where startups and researchers work side-by-side to bring scientific breakthroughs to life.

Since we wanted the visit to be hands-on, the afternoon featured several deep dives into transformative technologies:

  • Neuro-AI & Robotics: Efstratios Gavves demonstrated how neuro-AI is being integrated into autonomous robots. Developed in collaboration with industry giants like Toyota and BMW, these energy-efficient robots are designed to navigate and make decisions within the complex, shifting environments of modern manufacturing.

  • The Aurora Climate Model: Ana Lucic introduced us to Aurora, a groundbreaking foundation model for Earth systems. Developed through a massive multi-stakeholder collaboration (including Microsoft), Aurora can predict weather and atmospheric patterns with 10,000 times lower computational costs than traditional models. Because it is fully open-source, it democratizes access to high-quality climate forecasting for everything from air quality to tropical cyclone tracking.

  • Sustainable Materials at Scale: We heard from Max Welling on how his startup, CuspAI, is fast-tracking the discovery of sustainable materials. By applying advanced machine learning to fundamental molecular research, they are drastically shortening the time it takes to develop materials that can tackle global climate challenges.

  • Future of Media: We very briefly heard from David Vos from the IRLab (UvA), about the future of autonomous AI in transforming how news and information are delivered.

We are thankful for the visit and for all the speakers that contributed with such valuable insights!
