The ambition of the AILogLab is to nurture AI technology into its application in freight logistics, with anemphasis on data- and model-driven technology as part of the solution in the sector roadmap towardsefficient, sustainable, equitable and resilient freight transport systems. In this way the AILogLab creates aninternational centre of excellence in AI-based innovation for the logistics sector. The research programme ofAILogLab consists of six tracks (four of which have initiated; tracks 5 and 6 are planned for future addition tothe lab), with a focus on the application of AI methods for decision making in the logistics domain. Thesetracks are illustrated in the following diagram and explained in the remainder of this section.

Research projects

The AILogLab exists to leverage the power of AI for the many challenges faced by the logistics sector, with the vision of creating a more efficient, sustainable, equitable and resilient freight transportation system. Four faculties of the TU Delft are engaged in development of AI tools and methods, researching multiple aspects of freight transportation and logistics, in collaboration and shared ownership with private and public sector partners. Application areas of these co-created advances include logistics demand modelling and prediction; logistics operations such as scheduling; asset utilisation and planning; autonomous freight transport; infrastructure operations; and freight transport policy. Together the AILogLab strives to be an international
centre of excellence in AI-based innovation for the logistics sector.

Partners

ALICE European Technology Platform ALICE exists to develop and implement a comprehensive industry lead strategy for research, innovation and market deployment in the field of logistics and supply chain management in Europe. Role in AILogLab: Governing board. TU Delft partners with ALICE in a structural way.

 

KOTUG develops smart applications for the nautical industry, based on Artificial Intelligence. Role in AILogLab: Governing board. KOTUG and TUD have long-term partnership in AI-driven harbour, tug and barge optimization.

 

Macomi is a SME developing AI and data analytics in the logistics maintenance, port and rail sectors. Role in AILogLab: Governing board. Macomi and TUD have a long history of students and course projects, and Macomi currently is contributing to TU Delft AI education in logistics.

 

Rijkswaterstaat is part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands. Role in AILogLab: Governing board. RWS and TU Delft have intense cooperation on RWS core engineering topics. Focus on modernizing digitalization and automation programmes.

 

SmartPort is a neutral knowledge platform, stimulating alliances, financing scientific research and providing public knowledge dissemination. The aim is to speed up innovations in the Port of Rotterdam. Role in AILogLab: Governing board. SmartPort and TUD work closely to define AI innovation at the Port of Rotterdam and perform translational research to deliver these innovations.
