Driving scientific discovery with machine intelligence: an interview with Romana Pernisch

The newly released 10th National SDG Report, coordinated by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), provides a comprehensive assessment of where the Netherlands stands regarding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with just three years remaining until the 2030 deadline. The findings paint a picture of the nation’s trajectory, balancing measurable developmental milestones with urgent structural challenges.

Over the past decade, the Netherlands has demonstrated clear, structural progress in the fields of sustainability and social development. However, the report highlights that significant deficits persist in critical areas, most notably climate action, biodiversity preservation, and the socio-economic position of young people. As geopolitical and social tensions rise globally, the pressure on the SDG agenda has intensified, making targeted intervention more crucial than ever.

Aligning Innovation with Global Goals

A key takeaway from the report’s focus on the knowledge sector is the necessity of explicitly aligning national technology and innovation investments with an SDG perspective. Rather than viewing research and technological advancement in isolation, the report advocates for embedding defined societal objectives directly into advanced research frameworks to ensure measurable, positive impact.

The report points to the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC) project, ‘ROBUST – Trustworthy AI-based Systems for Sustainable Growth’. that ICAI has started a while ago. This ten-year Long Term Project (LTP) serves as a model for how advanced, human-centric research can utilize internationally recognized SDG guidelines to address complex societal issues. By framing scientific discovery around these global benchmarks, the surrounding research ecosystem is able to collaborate cohesively toward clear, practical goals.

The Strategy Moving Forward

Overall, the report outlines a three-fold strategic directive for researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders alike:

  • Accelerated Action: Immediate and swift implementation of sustainable solutions is required to hit targets within the remaining timeframe.

  • Policy Integration: Research insights and technological outcomes must be formally translated into solid policy and national legislation to secure long-term structural change.

  • Enhanced Cooperation: Cross-sector collaboration remains a prerequisite for success. Fragmentation must be countered by bundling initiatives across the public, private, and knowledge sectors to maximize collective impact.
